Giving Perfume as a Gift

Fact! Always check the return policy, especially if you're not sure whether the recipient will like the perfume you chose for them.

Careful thought should be given to the choice of perfume gift for a friend or relative. Of course, this is assuming you already know they wear, and want, perfume. Many beautiful bottles have been given that wind up sitting on a shelf gathering dust, never being used.

What Type of Gift to Give
Many people have allergies and sensitivities to certain fragrances or certain components of a fragrance. If you can't find out what those are then perfume is probably not a good choice of gift. You might want to consider a room spray or candles in their favorite scent, or a perfumed sachet. For someone who only uses perfume on rare occasions, you can give body or dusting powder, lotions or bath gels, or put together a potpourri mix and spray it with their favorite scent. If you're the crafty type, you can even make incense with a fragrance you know they like.

If the person does wear perfume regularly, you'll want to make sure the scent is one they'll appreciate and be able to use. Men often make the mistake of choosing a scent they've smelled on someone else and think the special person in their life will like it also. Even though the intention is good, it's not always a smart thing to do since perfume can smell different on different people. Take the time to find out what types of fragrance the person likes to wear and choose that scent or something similar.

Fact! Don't forget men have their favorite scents too! You don't necessarily have to give them cologne or aftershave; try candles, incense, or even a potpourri mix - in some type of masculine-looking container of course!

Types of Perfume Gifts
The choice of perfume gifts is huge and can be overwhelming. It's important to understand the various types of fragrances that can be chosen. True perfume is usually expensive but is the most potent of all the scent strengths. The perfume bottles are small and very beautiful and are designed to represent the personality of the fragrance and the designer. If you have the budget for it, the gift of true perfume is a very nice choice that will be appreciated.

For those of us who have less to spend or don't need to buy such a costly version, Eau de Toilette, which is the next strength down from perfume, or Eau de Cologne (a lesser strength still) will prove to be a good choice. Because these are less potent, they are less expensive and come in a larger and usually less decorative bottle.

Many perfume companies also offer a gift package that contains several small bottles of their scent in the various forms. If you're not sure of what strength to get, this is always a nice choice for a perfume gift.
