The Brow (Third Eye) Chakra

This chakra is called the Third Eye chakra; it's the center of intuition, of thought and of spirituality. It has to do with psychic abilities, to see clearly both internally and externally; the ability to see beyond the phsycial - to see aurus and to be clairvoyant. This energy center is particularly related to the fears of cultures which wish to believe only that which they can experience with the physical senses, and blockage abound, including fear of the imagination, of dreams, and one's "irrational" intuitions. It is used to question the spiritual nature of our life. Our inner vision is contained here, inner dreams, gifts of clairvoyance, wisdom and perception. The dreams of our life are held here. It's about insight and visualization. Intuition and positive visualizations are propelled into the world through this chakra when it's healthy. In order for this chakra to work at its best, it much be strong and balanced. It also assists you with your intellectual abilities. It helps you to retain an open-mindedness to the ideas of others and gives you the ability to learn from experience.

It's called "Ajna" which means "command center". Mastery of this chakra gives control over all the other chakras and the body as a whole. This is why the ancients wore the bindi here - to remind themselves of this powerful chakra.

This chakra may begin its development between the ages of 21 and 26 bu tmany of us don't spontaneously develop our brow until the time of the second (ages 51-56) or third (ages 81-86) focus. Some never develop it in this lifetime. Occassionally there's precocious development in actively psychic young people.

LOCATION (on the body): in the center of your forehead, just above the eyes.

COLOR associated with it: indigo or purplish-blue

ELEMENT: Telephatic (etheric) energy

SENSE: All senses, plus a 6th sense

PHYSICAL AREAS OF THE BODY AFFECTED: This chakra governs the base of the skull, the left eye, pituitary gland, face, nose, sinus, cerebellum, the immune system, left brain, nervous system, pineal gland, forehead, medulla oblongata, hypothalamus.

INFORMATION STORED IN THIS CHAKRA: relates to your wisdom, intuition, intellect, and seekinga clear picture.

POSITIVE QUALITIES:would include self-realization, oneness, unity, imagination, vision, wisdom, intuition, responsibility, integrity, faithfulness, orderly mind, clairvoyance, telepathy, imagination, dreams.

WHEN HEALTHY - You're at peace with yourself, able to study / investigate issues of spirituality. You'll be able to develop your psychic awareness; your intellect is well-developed or developing. You're perceptive, able to follow your soul's path and you trust your intuition. You have good visualization skills and may even have a link to things that others do not. You'll be charismatic, and charming, intellectually at the top of your game, you think clearly.

NEGATIVE QUALITIES: would include obsessive worrying, envy, doubting everything; being undisciplined, over-sensitive, rigidity, close-mindedness, aimlessness, confusion, fear.

WHEN OUT OF BALANCE, DEFICIENT, OR BLOCKED - you may jump from idea to idea with little focus, have lack of purpose, loss of identity, no real connection to the Divine, emotional attachment and in the extreme could result in schizophrenia. You have no new thoughts and no new learning. When weak this center may cause self-doubt, forgetfulness, an inability to trust your instincts. You may over-analyze everything, be overly superstitious, inconsiderate. You can't think for yourself, are afraid of success, tend to rely on authorities; you may suffer from frequent nightmares, doubt yourself and your abilities.

WHEN OVER-ACTIVE - You have difficulty concentrating, may experience hallucinations; you're impatient, fearful, and overly-sensitive. You seem "spaced out" or uncaring most of the time, can be too proud, manipulative, dogmatic, authoritarian, cold, mean, bitter and ungracious. You tend to belittle others. You may live in a fantasy world; you may also be overwhelmed with psychic information to the point of interfering with your daily life.

COMMON ADDICTIONS - shopping, possessiveness, cultish behaviors

PHYSICAL DYSFUNCTIONS of the Brow Chakra could include panic attacks, depression, insomnia, blindness, strokes, headaches and migraines, vision problems, sinus problems or some ear problems. Learning disabilities, seizures, poor memory, brain tumors, or anxiety disorders are also possible dysfunctions.

QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF: to help determine if this chakra needs clearing/recharging:

1. Do you find it hard to follow through with ideas and plans?
2. Do you ridicule other peoples' beliefs?
3. Do you blame others for various situations in your life?
4. Do you have trouble visualizing?
5. Do you have nightmares, insomnia?
6. Do you have problems with your eyes?
6. Do you have difficulty recognizing and connecting with a higher power than yourself?
6. Do you always need to intellectualize everything?

Depending on your answers to these questions, you might want to spend a little time each day focusing on the Brow Chakra to help you balance out your physical/emotional bodies.

Some things that may help you to become balanced are using colors, crystals, and gemstones, herbs, oils, etc. with your meditation or other chakra work. I have included a little information on these below.

COLOR:
To open your Brow Chakra, try wearing or using indigo or dark blue.

To tone it down or balance it, try wearing or using some yellowish-orange or yellowish-brown.

Keep in mind when using indigo that this color stimulates the parathyroid, but it depresses the thyroid, and use it accordingly.

MUSIC/SOUNDS: This chakra responds well to pieces that would allow scenes and images to appear in the mind's eye.

GEMSTONES:

To strengthen this chakra use amethyst, azurite, lapis lazuli, sugalite, star sapphire or blue sapphire.
To balance this chakra use moonstone, flourite, iolite, or quartz.
To tone down this chakra use yellow-orange citrine, yellowish tiger's eye.

Some stones for specific work with this chakra are the:

- Amethyst helps with sleep and peaceful dreams.
- Azurite helps you consciously look at old programmed beliefs and dissolve them.
- Charoite helps dissolve fears, both known and unknown.
- Hawk's Eye helps you see your life with an aerial vision, see the big picture.
- Kyanite reminds you that everything happens for a reason and that you are ultimately in charge; it often brings to the surface beliefs you have accepted as fact that don't serve you any longer.
- Lapis Lazuli helps you discover your hidden beliefs and bring them to the surface.
- Moss Agate helps balance the left and right sides of the brain.
- Sugalite helps us release guilt and resentment.

HERBS associated with the Brow Chakra: Hyacinth, african violets, queen anne's lace, wild oat, lavender

FRAGRANCES/OIL/INCENCES: Hyacinth, violet, rose geranium, pine, juniper, basil, jasmine, rosemary, patchouli, cedarwood, camphor, vanilla, lavender

AFFIRMATIONS:

SOME ACTIVITIES TO AWAKEN/BALANCE:the Heart Chakra:

- Meditate, do guided visualizations.
- Keep a dream journal.
- Have a conscious awareness of coincidences and serendipitous occurrences.
- Lay down with a gemstone or a small pyramid on your forehead.
